Sunshine and Summertime

Heyyyyyy!

Things are going pretty fabulously around here -- weather is good, work could be better but is good because of the guy who consistently gives me coffee and because if I wasn't being challenged I would be bored -- and I'm enjoying spending time with people!

Yay for long weekends. Last Monday (aka two days ago) I had a PD day and then next Monday is Victoria Day plus I get Friday off because I'm taking it! Bwahaha. My room is still messy but that is because my old desk is still blocking off my closet so I have nowhere to put anything -- at least there is a floor.

This weekend I plan on writing letters to people/calling people to catch up. For those of you who are too far away for me to call, I'm waving enthusiastically (pretend you can see from your respective locations in Korea, New Zealand and Japan okay?)

Hairspray was fabulous - the actors messed up on stage and made everyone laugh. The parents of the main character are played by two male actors -- despite one of the parents being female, and there was a joke about equipment size and the one actor (who was an understudy) playing the female parent just cracked up on stage... for about a minute (just long enough to be funny and then he pulled himself together to continue). Thats why I love live theatre there are so many real moments incorporated into it.

Well, thats all for now. I'm heading up North for the long weekend so I hope you all enjoy the sun, fireworks and time off (even those of you not celebrating Victoria Day.. I hope you enjoy your day regardless)

BYE!!!!

I suppose despite the fact that nobody reads this its worth updating for some sort of purpose... mainly because I enjoy writing and telling people what's going on. There are a few new things in my life and lots of cleaning out of the old and I'm feeling pretty good about this summer.

My birthday is coming up, I'm going to be 20 which is scary in itself but also really kind of cool. I have been thinking about everything thats happened in my life (so far) and how much I've grown and I can pretty much pinpoint the spots in my life where something happened to trigger some sort of change -- i'm not looking for it per say but I am finding out little things about myself I never really used to know.

My Fridays and Saturdays are consisting of time spent with family and friends which is so awesome. Yesterday I went to volunteer at my Mom's school with Bingo night and Lisa came to help -- it was awesome just to sit and play Bingo and call numbers and hang out with someone. We had one of our good chats on the way home -- I love talking to Lisa, she's fabulous.

Tonight I'm going to see Hairspray with the other Lisa from camp -- its going to be great. Worth the money I shouldn't be spending.

Other than that I have been spending my summer so far doing exactly what I said I would be doing, which is making life happy, fun, and worthwhile. I've been going to the gym and exercising or running almost every day (with the exception of the day I felt so gross and sick this week) and I am working full time at an elementary school with two children who don't quite qualify for BTA assistance (thats Behavioural Teaching Assistant) which is such a challenge but so rewarding. It doesn't pay nearly as much as my job last year but I wouldn't give it up at all.

I am learning the guitar and the flute, playing the piano and singing as much as possible. I am also reading like mad. For anybody who does read this I highly recommend the book "The Girls" by Lori Lansens. Its about a pair of siamese twins who are joined at the back of the head. Its fictional but written as the girls autobiography -- its fabulous and if you're looking for a summer read to get lost in that isn't pure smut (what I was reading prior to that) -- read this book.

Today I'm going to the library to get started on my Time's book list and I'm excited about that too. I still have to clean and redecorate but those are in the process of happening. I'm also playing the Wii and watching DVD's when I don't have any more energy and that is good as well.

So basically -- I'm having a great summer so far and really feel like I'm cleaning out the mess that was created last year by invisible forces! I want to have my head and my wits about me when I go to don's camp in the fall.

Love,
Amalia

PS:

There is a nest of robins in my front yard just above where I park my car. I've been having to get out on the passenger side but that's okay because the babies were born yesterday -- they're adorable and I hope they survive! Also, there is a mutant tulip in my Mom's garden. It's exactly half yellow and half red. Not mixed together but one half is one colour and the other is another... its kind of cool. I'll put a picture up next time I write.

Well, I'm off to the library and then to Toronto so I hope you are all healthy and happy and getting what you want out of your summer. Jess, I hope Chicoutimi is treating you well and good luck with the French!!!

Summmmmerrrrrrrr

I'm finally all moved back, now I just have to tackle cleaning my room and ensuring that everything is set up for my employment on Monday and then I'm good to go for summer jobs and such. It's going to be a tiring summer but an enjoyable one I feel.

Yesterday my brother's choir won first in Canada on the CBC Radio2 competition, I was part of the live audience and they were incredible. They totally deserved to win!! I was very impressed.

I got a build-a-bear or should I say a build-a-cheetah!! He's so cool.

Anyways, there isn't much going on right now -- off to Hamilton today to visit Ayden and Logan! I love those two (they are 3 and the second one is turning 1 on Friday or Saturday!) They are so much fun to play with.

I hope you are all doing well, keep in touch via facebook or whatnot cause I'm boycotting msn this summer.

one more exam

Hey everyone;

There is one more exam standing in between me and summer and it is SO difficult to study for it! You think it would be easy considering that the three essay topics were given to us (and we only have to write on two of them), as well as the fact that after its done summer is here -- that should MOTIVATE me...

alas, it doesnt.

I have been seeing so many of my favourite people lately. I have been spending a lot of time with friends who I may not see all summer, and thats nice.

Anyways -- as much as I am looking forward to summer I will miss the non living with family part of it -- however, i miss my family. Can't have it both ways!

Here is to an incredible, fun-filled summer.

In Addition...

In addition... I got a smoothie from Baskin Robbins and the guy (who has known me since I was three) made me a sugar-free smoothie instead of the regular one.. and charged me less. It just made life that much better.

"have you seen my classmate?"

Hello!!

Today is BEAUTIFUL... I am quite content this afternoon, unlike this morning and all of yesterday.

Stupid yesterday, I won't waste too much time on it but basically I have to get my wisdom teeth out and had a pointless consultation (where they thought I was an emergency) due to a misunderstanding... and then had to leave Toronto in rush hour. It sounds not bad.. but with all the pain and looking in my mouth for three hours and x-rays and moulds it was awful. I promise.

But, putting all that aside, other than waking up at 6am this morning, life is good. I went to my new job and got lots of the forms filled out -- I went to my Mom's school and had lunch with her and played secretary and then I came home and went for a walk.

The cutest part was when I was just heading to my Mom's school and I was walking up the drive and a kid comes up to me and goes "ms. principal's daughter... have you seen my classmate?" and I was like "no... why?" Turns out, the kid had "lost" his friend who had to go to the bathroom. Poor guy he was really worried, but I thought it was quite hilarious that he chose to ask me instead of the teachers outside. Anyways, we found her, she had gone back to class, but it was a cute moment.

I'm heading outside to study mood disorders and suicide -- I'm hoping the sunlight will counteract the morose topic. Hope all is well and none of you have had disastrous dentist appointments lately.

*shrugs* i dunno

I am not sure how I feel today or right now... I'm all snuggled up in a sweater... that means a lot to me. Let's just say that it is not my sweater and is not a sweater of anyone who is currently a part of my life. It is a sweater that holds a lot of memories and a sweater that (apparently) makes me feel comforted.

For some reason today I am just exteremely overwhelmed by school and relationships and I really want to be alone... which I am. I just have to get moving cause these exams are not going to write themselves tomorrow (wouldn't that be nice) and I have absolutely no idea how to study for them. . . .

Went to exclusively women's with Dana this morning and got a free week pass as well as like an hour long talk about memberships and stuff when all I wanted to do was go back to the apartment and study HOWEVER.. i may join up in September. The lady told us we might as well pay the overall fee now and then just activate our membership in September which makes sense to me but Dana was kind of thinking that there is no way they are going to quote us one thing now and then make us pay a different fee in September. . . but whatever.

I am going to call my parents tonight and ask for their opinion about it.

Usually I don't mind days like this where I feel lethargic and I'm tired and I just want to be all cuddly and warm (never usually in this sweater though). This is a sweater I dig out when I can't deal with things .... its really ironic. I would say more but I'm afraid to overshare on the internet as so many do.

Haha.. regardless.. I must get working... despite the fact I feel like falling asleep instead of working and potentially falling apart.

PS: I've come to the conclusions that my headaches are from too much caffiene. *shrugs*

I dunno.

Just a note...

If you haven't read the one below with the video please also do so -- its more important than what is below.

I reached my Kids Help Phone fundraising goal today!!! $500. So naturally, I set a new one. I'm only 75$ away from my goal now! If you can contribute anything it would be awesome and make a child's life that much more hopeful. I called Kids Help Phone once when I was little, and it made a huge difference. That's why I'm so invested in the walk. Any bit of support will help!

Possibly of Interest

So, I don't usually post like activist awareness things on here, however, this has come to my attention and I think its worthy of taking a look by us all. If you feel as strongly as I did by what you hear in the video then the complaint URL's are at the bottom.

On April 1st, the The Late Show with David Letterman aired Dave's Top Ten, which were, "Messages left on the pregnant man's answering machine."

The list was about Thomas Beatie, a transgendered man who kept his female reproductive organs during his transition. Mr. Beatie recently made headlines when he revealed that he was pregnant.

The list portrayed Mr. Beatie and other transgendered people as freak shows. As number one was revealed, it became apparent that it was exactly what they were trying to do: "Michael Jackson here -- just wanted to reach out to another androgynous freak show."

While some may claim that it was just in good fun, "jokes" around skin colour would have been just as offensive during the civil rights movement for black people. With LGBT/queer people still fighting for rights and social acceptance, comments like those on The Late Show, are nothing more than tasteless and offensive. If being offensive was not the intention of Mr. Letterman and The Late Show, then they were being downright insensitive to an issue that causes countless teens to commit suicide every year, and many others to face harassment, assault, and just as recently as Lawrence King, murder.

the simple things...

Today was a really good day... despite the fact that I have still not started working, thats about to change right after this post is published.. i promise!

Lately there have been a lot of the simple things in my life that have made me happy and reminded me how good things can be...

1. Breakfast out: Today Matt and I went to grab breakfast at the Ido Cafe around the corner from my house.. it cost us 14$ and we got pancakes, bacon, homefries, three eggs (total not each), toast and fruit plus an orange juice and coffee. It was sweet! I loved having breakfast it just felt so special.
2. Little neighbourhood hangouts: This is what the Ido Cafe is to me -- its a place where I've been hanging out for a long time and its just such a simple family owned restaurant that serves such great food and has such great people. Chances are I know someone who is eating there and thats so awesome.
3. Driving around: Despite the negative impact on the environment sometimes its just so great to be in the car and talk. Matt had his driving test so we were practicing and driving around for a couple hours.
4. Seeing someone else accomplish something they really want: I love Love LOVE celebrating with other people and congratulating them -- its amazing to see people's successes and I love being a bystander and helping them celebrate. Yes, Matt got his G.
5. Being silly: Sometimes just being a fool is so much fun.
6. Interacting with Strangers: Some strangers are bad yes, but when you engage with people, like the hairstylist who did his haircut today or the pregnant lady in line who is having her eighth child tomorrow or the man at the post office or Sue the woman at the drive centre, or even the mom who is waiting for her child at the drive center you learn SO much about people... and its so much more real than the superficial contact our generation seems to be stuck in on a daily basis.
7. Looking at old photos: I love this... its so simple but it can bring back so many memories.. and when they are not your photos you can learn a lot about the other persons hopes and dreams.. it speaks volumes. Also, if you stop to wonder about the passerbys who get in the way of the photo like where they are now it gives you such great thoughts and lets your imagination run wild.
8. Walking the dog: Dogs are so cool... I've totally become a dog person in the last week. You learn so much about your environment when you go for a walk.. and you interact with many people. Plus, its just so awesome to walk with someone and the dog and chat and... yay simplicity.
9. Music: enough said.

Anyways, today was filled with the simplicities of life and I feel refreshed and renewed. Just thought I'd share. <3 you all.

Back! (with sniffles...)

Hey all;

New York City = amazing. It was really a great weekend... bonding time with my Mom and sightseeing in New York. I love traveling because I can just explore and be myself and it was fabulous to be going places and getting along with my Mom and seeing things.

Anyways, it seems crazy that I was there because I am now back and in class and sick, although happy.

I really love the way I feel when I travel and when I get back and I love exploring new places. Anyways, we saw a great deal of sights. Friday was the statue of liberty and times square and ground zero (World Trade Center site) and wall street, battery park and the museum of native Americans. We saw Rent that night as well.

The next day we walked the opposite direction up Fifth Avenue and saw the Metropolitan Museum of Art and St. Patricks Cathedral and all the big stores and Central Park. That night we saw Spring Awakening which was really different and interesting.

Sunday we saw the Modern Museum of Art and a different part of NYC, less touristy around 54th and 8th. Then we saw a Matinee of Sunday in the Park with George. So many things that we did in such a short time.

Well, thats about it. I wanted to share a couple of my favourite pictures (there are a gajillion on facebook so if you have me as a friend there just look them all up). I'm outie now, decided that being sick is no excuse for being lazy around the house all day.. perhaps running errands will make me feel better.

Lates dudes and dudettes..

Amalia

PS: Here's a video from FAO Schwartz BIG PIANO!.

I think my favourite part is when the guy at the end goes "oh! Haha!"

Paris

I really want to one day, just pick up and fly to Paris

And just be there... and explore... for a week.. or two!

<3

I have a travel bug.

Lazy winter mornings

I love this song, "Nineteen Stars" by Meg and Dia.
Check it out at www.myspace.com/megdia

Below are some excerpts that I <3>

Don't tell me
You're done for
I don't need to hear you're done for
You can tell me what you were running from
I need you more than you need you

I can see you're really really running
May I ask you, where you're gonna run to
And you think you're living as a ghost now

Don't tell me nothing matters
I'll tell you we're what matters
Bare feet in the summer
Open windows at night
You think that no one needs you
You have nothing to see through
Well I need you I need you don't I count this time

No one can catch me the way that you catch me the way that you keep me when I'm out of time. What if i need you when i can't see you when I'm running out of light?

STRIKE!!!

Part timers are on strike! This means that although three of my classes are affected it is not really a big deal for me -- because two out of those three it is just my tutorial leaders, but the other is a full cancellation -- but it is distance ed which is self-directed anyways. We will see.

I think the strike is silly -- I think that the students are being used as bargaining chips. I think that the part-timers are presenting their situation as worse than it is and I think the University could probably do more to help the students.

But like many others, I am neutral in this situation. In the end, the ones who suffer are the students.
Thats not fair.

We will see how it ends up -- but as of right now, I get a five day weekend so I'm happy about that!
I hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Brilliant

I've decided that as long as I'm in this stellar mood the word "Brilliant" is going to be my answer to "how is your day going" -- merely because a) I am doing brilliantly today and b) too many times people just ask "how is your day" expecting "fine" or "good" or "bad" or in Lianna's case, "kill me" -- so today I am going to be Brilliant.

Also, when people answer with the unexpected it starts up a conversation. Too many people just ask in passing and its like "how are youuuu" as they walk down the hallway. TALK TO PEOPLE! Stop them and be like, seriously, whats going on, why is your day fine, how are you doing, want to grab lunch? etc. (not all at the same time and not if you don't know them very well... you will most likely just scare the person away!)

In a not so brilliant way, I am having the weirdest pains in my middle lower back in my spine whenever I breathe (which, by the way, is all the time). This started yesterday while I was working on my essay and then continued into the night... I had the CRAZIEST dream. Dana and I were at an airport with a car and we had like an hour till our next flight (why we had a car I do not know) and there was this gangster guy who needed a ride to the other terminal (he had missed the shuttle) and Dana is giving me this "seriously Amalia we're going to let this gangster ride with us" look and I'm like "sure, get in the back" -- and then I stop at the terminal and Dana gets out of the car and he's like "Just one second" and he's like "i'm not getting my gun" and he pulls it out, shoots me in the back through the seat, grabs Dana and runs away. But I could see him grab it in the rearview mirror so I angled myself so it didn't hit my heart (it came close).. and then I was left in this car in this deserted parking lot, Dana was missing, and I was struggling to find something to put pressure on the wound when I woke up.

It was scary! Anyways I woke up to my back just aching. I think its a muscle stress thing but it could be something else -- I'll get it checked out this weekend.

ANYWAYS.. back to brilliantness!!!

9 days until New York City and ONE MORE ESSAY TO TACKLE BEFORE I CAN GO!!!!! One out of four. I've already finished THREE... craazzzzzzyyyy!!!! This is the one I did really bad on the outline but I have to admit I didn't try -- therefore this time I'm trying.. I went to the library this morning at 9:30am to get books and everything.

In New York my mom and I are for sure seeing Rent and Sunday in the Park With George. On the Saturday we are either going to see Hairspray, Wicked or Spring Awakening -- we're just trying to find tickets that don't cost us a bajillion mulas!!

We're also going to the MOMA, the MET, Central Park, probably to Soho, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and Fifth Avenue!!! IM SO EXCITED because I love NYC!

*dances*

Anyways, this young woman who is doing "brilliantly" thank you for asking -- is going to get some work done.

LOVE!

I have made a HUGE decision and now I just have to be happy with it (which I am)

Yay for decision making abilities and skills and for happy posts that make me *smile*

Yay for finishing 10 page essays

Yay, just ... yay.

contemplativeness

Lately it seems as if I'm always wearing my cranky-pants (code for being cranky).

Ever since Friday morning really -- its just, *sighs* there is so much opportunity and so much to do in this life and so much that I want but... none of it seems organized.

I've been contemplating whether or not I keep myself so busy because I'm scared of doing nothing, as in, scared of the time alone or without something to do or someone to see or if its cause I actually want it this way.

Oh i know where this question is leading, and I know the answer that will come out of it but it doesn't mean that I look forward to the completion of my thought process.

*sighs*

A myriad of moments

There are parts of today that I would define as a moment -- not the happy kind though, unless you count the fact that I am introspective about it and seeing it as a learning experience as happy.

Perhaps -- Positive Mental Attitude -- something I want Matt to teach me more about (the concept behind it, sillies).

Ever have that moment where life is perfect, everything is going full speed ahead, you're a little tired but couldn't be happier that everything is in sync and working..? And then, all of a sudden, things slow down and IN AND INSTANT start to move backwards?

That was today.

It's... interesting.

I don't know what I'm going to do but all I know is that I took his talk and started to doubt myself. . . or really my strength in handing my life over to two of the most demanding jobs on campus.

I am actually not sure what I'm going to do now -- hopefully insight from a few key people will help.

Love now and always!

I think of you at the weirdest times . . .

It's hard to sit still.

Moving is the only way
It's an interesting thing
Sittin and listening to those who are
Speaking of things you don't understand

You would know
Open minded and intellectual
Understanding me, like no one else can do.

Alone

Okay, so for this one I'm referencing my cousin's blog, which if you guys get a chance is an awesome couple of posts to read (see link to Jeremy). For those of you who don't really want to read another post from someone else, here is a line that really caught me.

"I feel like my mind is an open field, but also like a labyrinth." I totally one hundred percent agree with this statement he makes. I don't know how to explain why, but it definitely speaks to me.

Also, I entitled this post "Alone" the same way he titled his because I am absolutely petrified of being left alone for fear it will never change! Maybe its the self-consciousness in me, or maybe its just cause there are times in my life when I have felt completely alone and I don't want to go back.

I admire my cousin for having the ability to be alone and be comfortable with it.
Thats all, I have an essay to finish by 2:30
<3

Disenchantment with the Institution Part 2

It was very interesting tonight, as I did my Discover the Leader in You session (my first leadership presentation ever!!) on ethics and leadership the topic came up of cheating (as it so often does).

And the opinions of many of the students attending was that by not telling on the cheaters I was just as bad as those who did cheat. My counter to them was that everyone flies by their own ethical compass and as of yet I did not feel guilty or regret --- in my opinion I cannot control their behaviour.

It was really just interesting to hear all the debate about my situation -- part of the reason I love being a mentor.

But here is the big question...

If you let others cheat is it as bad as cheating yourself?

Sidenote: i really was not offended by the comments -- I was intrigued. Ethics is such an interesting topic.

Disenchantment with the Institution

Quickly, because I have to drive Dana and me to school so I can work on an essay that doesn't deal with any real issues and is something I could care less about. I digress.

My disenchantment with the institutions academic quality as a whole. A tutorial leader who allows his students to just ramble on and gives his opinion about politics, not any facts they can learn to base their own opinions on. A professor, chair of a department who doesn't change his midterm at all, allows those who merely sleep through it to rewrite it and then LEAVES the room for an hour and a half. While they all cheat my sense of morality and ethics prevents me from doing that as well.

And at 6:30 I made the decision not to intervene and not to tattle knowing full well that if they decide to I'm screwed as well. And knowing full well that if I get a low mark that they all got 100 because they cheated the whole time.

I could not cheat And I can't talttle. I did my best and it is not my business to interfere with the decisions of others.

I'm so frustrated

And disenchanted yes, this institution may breed leaders but what good is that if the current (academic) leaders of the institution breed contempt and disregard for the academic integrity of their students, somthing that this institution prides itself on?

A fine moral dilemma. Only my actions count, and in the end I can remain with my integrity intact.

Thoughts?

disappointing cheesecakes

I'm beginning to think I can tell what kind of night I'm going to have by the type of cheesecake I've eaten.

Really, eventually I'm going to have to stop eating cheesecake as it is not helping the pounds that seem to keep magically adding themselves to my waistline.

Regardless, yesterday I had this AMAZING brownie cheesecake from Swiss Chalet, absolutely delish. It was incroyable! And I also had a great night with my roommates, and it was snowing so we were all stuck inside but we didn't care. It was fabulous anyways.

Today, I went to the Keg with Matt for our anniversary dinner and had cheesecake. But it was plain jane cheesecake (usually awesome) that tonight didn't meet my standards for cheesecake, especially Keg cheesecake.
And the night was a bummer as well.

If only I ate cheesecake every day, maybe I could learn to predict (the very near) future. I miss my good friends who I don't talk to anymore. They are far away and new ones come along so few and far between.

I am an attention seeking misfit. (who hates studying)

www.quarterlife.com -- sweet show.

I am not going to learn anything now -- maybe I'll sleep until 8 and then work. Good idea. Here's to failing a midterm tomorrow *yay* (not).

Goodnight, sleep tight, don't eat too much cheesecake.

Skipped Classes and Artistic Peace

I get so comfortable in the leadership center. I like it here -- individualized learning, a safe place for thoughts and ideas to surface and a great place to start taking risks. Its a place for friendship and for fun, a place for learning and a place for motivation.

I just love it here. Can you tell? But the problem with loving a location so much is that you get used to it, you are comforted by being there.. and the danger in that is that I STILL HAVE CLASS. I still have things to go to and things to do.

And sometimes, the need to be not at class and the environment that is the Student Leadership Center keep me from going to school. *sad face*

However, I did get to catch up with Lisa and go to the artistic peace festival celebration doohicky that was happening in the concourse. Quite exciting -- I love art. So much.

I will write more about the artistic peace festival celebration doohicky later -- I just wish I had taken video of the drum circle!!! Also, I dropped cream cheese on one of the art pieces and had to clean it up.

*sighs*

Write more later,
Off to catch a ride home
AND MAKE STEAK!!!!!!

Love love,

How could I forget....?

Totally forgot something!

Writing a Psych assignment that is all about the protective and risk factors in my life -- gahgahgahgahghahagagha -- its really personal and I'm not sure how much I like it, but its 1500 words done and due tomorrow. So i'm not changing anything.

Its just another way to address those Challenges.

I need to stop making people worry about me (Disclaimer: its not like I do it on purpose).

Challenges

Goooood morning *smiles*

I'm eating Mini Wheats. Not that it matters. My one roommate is blaring her angry music and the other is (I assume) studying. The third is on campus already (being an early bird that she usually is not!)

Today I have to pay for parking due to being lazy. Damn laziness!

Mini wheats are so good.

I've decided that to get by in life you really have to choose your attitude about what's going on in your life. Everyone experiences challenges, they are part of the road map to success.

Without Challenge, Success would be an every day thing. Success -- would become normal. Then what would you have to look forward to?

Our challenges do not define who we are.... but the way we handle them impacts our ability to succeed.

I am so excited about the creation of my leadership wall at home. I was making re-arrangement plans in my head last night as I fell asleep.

Hence the reason I have decided to choose my attitude.

No more fallen angel -- I"m back on my feet.
